What is Intel and what is AMD? In simple terms, they are the two major manufactures and brands of CPUs or central processing units. You could consider Coca-Cola to be Intel while Pepsi could be compared to AMD. Both have thousands of loyal followers and those who are loyal to each swear that their favorite is the best. If you are new to the world of computer components, how are you really supposed to figure out what is the best CPU for your particular needs.
If we look at one chip from each manufacture, we will compare the features and help you determine the better chip for you. To make this as fair a comparison as possible in terms most people can readily understand and to help the majority of people, we can compare closely priced chips. Both CPUs in this comparison are less than $50 normally priced with no sales.
Up first, we have the AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.80 GHz Chip this particular chip has 128KB Cache, and pulls a nice 1000MHz Front side bus. Up against this CPU we are placing the Intel Celeron D 356 3.33 GHz. The Intel Celeron has a slightly larger 512KB Cache; however, the Front side bus only pulls at 533MHz. As you can see, there is a large difference in the CPU speeds. Remember, not all companies measure MHz in the same standards.
From my personal experience, I have noticed that an AMD chip that is 1.5GHz is comparable to an Intel chip that is 3GHz. Intel and AMD are not the only companies that measure MHz in different increments, look at Apple computers for another example. Both of these chips are within the same price range, and depending upon the store purchased from have a price difference of only approximately $5.
The biggest difference in these two chips overall is the difference in the Cache, which is quickly accessible memory. The AMD has only 128KB, while the Intel chip has 512KB this leads the consumer to believe that the Intel chip is better. Yet if we look further, there is another major difference in the chips. The AMD chip has a 1000MHz FSB or front side bus, while the Intel chip has only a 533 FSB speed. This means that the AMD is able to move information quicker, while the Intel can store more information temporarily.
This brings us to the final comparisons for these chips. The motherboard connections. AMD and Intel chips are not cross compatible, so you are unable to switch one chip for the other without being required to change complete motherboards, however if you are building a computer, or purchasing a computer you have the ability to select which chip you use. This particular AMD chip uses the Socket 939 connection which a large number of AMD chips uses as well, which would allow for easy upgrades later in the future, while the Intel chip uses a Socket 775, which while a common Intel socket, has fewer compatible chips as the AMD Socket 939.
Overall, the best CPU really depends upon the user, neither chip is particularly better on their own. AMD does have cheaper chips and is better for graphics and video processes. If you are looking for a chip to run a server and handle the load of a website, or other heavy purposes you may be very much better with an Intel chip.
