Things We’re Tired of Hearing from Linux Users

Posted by: Rea Maor In: Linux and Unix - Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Now hear this: From now on, Linux fans can just retire these tired old lines, because they have been officially declared to not work any more!

There aren’t any viruses or malware that run on Linux. Well, la de freaking da, there aren’t any games that run on Linux either, what’s your point? Coincidentally, no attempts have been made to break into the Porta-John at the construction site down the road, but many people have tried to break into banks. That proves that Porta-Johns have better security than banks!!!

Linux is free as in freedom, I mean free as in liberty, I mean free as in beer… Free as in speech, free as in butterflies, free as in cholera, free as in copies of Photoshop on PirateBay.org, etc. Hey, I have a bright idea: why don’t you just pick a new adjective that doesn’t have twenty meanings???

This license is freer than that one, no wait, Sun’s license is freer than BSD, no, wait, the GPL3 is freer than the GPL2, no it isn’t! If the license bothers you so much, just do what I do: as soon as you download the software, just delete the license and do what the hell you want with the software.

My system uptime is now 9 million millenia, 8 parsecs, and sixteen seconds! That’s about as long as the rest of us have had our earplugs in so we can’t hear you. Incidentally, some of us are too busy using our computers to worry about how many milliseconds they’ve been up.

If everyone who loves Linux contributes one dollar to our campaign to raise Linux awareness… Yes, we all heard about the Linux sponsorship of that car race in America. And we all saw the car with the alleged penguin sticker (a black and white blurry circle on the nose) crashtwice! Putting both drivers in the hospital! If there is anybody on the planet who had their opinion of Linux raised by this experiment, I have yet to see it. All we know from this is that Linux users can be just as pesky as Jehovah’s Witnesses and Amway salesmen.

Linux doesn’t have enough drivers, this company won’t support Linux, Microsoft is mean to Linux Well, Linux, you wanted to be a world-class operating system! Congratulations, here you are. Now quit whining about the exact same problems that every single other software company faces and just solve what you can. Microsoft, too, has issues with drivers. MacIntosh, too, has companies that won’t support them. BSD, also, has companies that won’t be nice to them. It’s called “business”. Sometimes, business is actually DIFFICULT! Sorry to bust your bubble.

Pssst… Did you enjoy slashing and hitting me on the Linux subject? Do you own IPod? Are you still trying to install a game on your G4? Slash me again on my latest article “Things We’re Tired of Hearing from Mac Users

Please people, don’t feed the troll.

  2. Comrade Smack Says:

That’s not entirely fair. Honestly, there are viruses for Linux, but the point is still valid. The problem with your statement is that sure, there isn’t much for home users in Linux (as a general statement) but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have functionality. Linux is a fantastic operating system and no one can say that it isn’t. It just has his pros and cons, much like Windows. But Linux isn’t inherently secure. I’ve broken into more Linux boxes than Windows by far. But linux does actually Offer security, something that other Operating systems have problems with.

Linux is free as in freedom. Not free as in cost. That would be Stallman’s way of presenting the Operating System to businessmen who think there isn’t profit in it. Tell that to Red Hat and SUSE.

In regards to the licenses, regardless of the license.txt that comes with the software, you’re still legally obligated to honor them.

Uptime is impressive. It’s for geeks with small penises.

I entirely agree with your other two points.

  3. Rea Maor Says:

Thats not a very nice thing to say, if you took a moment to read the post itself you would understand that it’s nothing against linux (or any other OS) it’s just how i see things, if you’ll take the time to come back tomorrow and the day after you’ll see i have a whole series of articles on Windows and MacOS as well.

  4. Richard Chapman Says:

I was going to comment but I seem to have misplaced my 10 foot pole.

  5. devnet Says:

So here are the problems with your article.

    1. No definition of “we”

What? do you have a turd in your pocket? Who’s there with you? Is this a collective We? If so, I didn’t ask you to speak for me. In fact, did you ask to speak for others at all? Are you assuming that you can speak for others here? What’s going on? Is the turd in your pocket still warm?

    2. Completely stereotyping Linux users all together

Not all Linux users are massively retarded like the chumps who’s phrases you’ve decided to highlight here. Perhaps you might rephrase to “Linux Zealots” as the Linux users I interact with don’t say the crap saying they do above.

    3. Sponsorship in a Car Race defines nothing…

Did you fault all the other crashed cars and their sponsors? Why don’t you rip into Citgo…their car crashed right? That means Citgo sux monkey nootz right? I bet you all the Citgo investors are a bunch of LAMERS!!! They paid for a sponsorship that crashed! They are teh suck!

#4 “If there is anybody on the planet who had their opinion of Linux raised by this experiment, I have yet to see it.”

Wow, you must not get out much…which is evident by #2. You have the audacity to actually assume that your limited scope of vision is the one that matters. Forget all that Indy 500 media research crap…those guys are a bunch of lamers too. They have no idea what they’re talking about…which is why companies like Citgo, Coca Cola, ABC, and Symantec advertise there…because they like pissing money away and not being effective at all. Much like your post.

    5. Linux Drivers

Linux supports more platforms and hardware than Windows can ever hope of supporting. You’re actually lying in this instance implying that it’s a problem area. It’s not :) But nice try. You do make yourself sound like you earned your chops in the school of soft knocks. Now put your meat helmet back on and try to come to some logical conclusions.

Now, go back to school and learn how to debate something…you did a piss poor job with it on this iteration. Give us the cold hard facts and I’ll agree with you. Give us a bunch of this ‘I don’t see’ and ‘us’ and ‘we’ crap and you come off sounding like an assuming, pretentious prat.

  6. Notthistime Says:

    Regarding your first part:
The bank is the #1 target - so what is the #1 target for computer attacks? How about Google (you might have heard of)? Isn’t that the biggest and greatest target? And guess what? They run Linux!
Or lets take WLAN devices - they also often run Linux. Heck, even the WLAN network at Microsofts headquarter runs Linux. Easily clear, clear and very useful targets.
Also, let’s have a look at a place where Open Source software has the major share: Web servers. Did you ever read about IIS 4 or IIS 5? How come that IIS worms made it into the evening news, but Apache worms never?

And yes: where I come even smaller banks are robbed sometimes. Because it is usually easier (guards not so well paid, not so high priced security systems, etc.). Still, I yet have to see a major all-systems-crashing worm like Blaster.

About most of the other points: well, its trolling around because you try to hint that only Linux has dumb users. Have you actually ever listened to dumb users from the other side? Of course there are dumb and stupid Linux users. But there are Windows users of the same type. So what is the point of your dumb post?

Ah, before I forget: about the driver part. There were enough lawsuits in the past, and there are still some today showing that Microsoft used its monopoly like power to force hardware vendors to not release drivers. You might want to digg even deeper and find the other parts where Microsoft tried to use their monopoly power. Latest example is Norway, I guess.

But, um, I know, only Linux users troll! Windows users always tell the truth and cover all facts and try to get a point of view from all angles, right? Like you did?

  7. Relaxion Says:

1 -> I have NEVER met any Linux user that would say that this kind of os is virus-free. There is a really small number of viruses comparing to Windows platform, and there are anti-viruses freely available (like ClamAV, AntiVir etc)

2 -> You donnot pay to obtain Linux, just to obtain support and maybe some software that you really need and it’s under restrictive license. So, basically, Linux is free as in freedom to use it without paying, freedom to modify it however it suits you etc etc.

3 -> I really don’t get what’s your pick on the multiple licenses available. Licenses must keep up with the times, as Microsoft tries everything to get Linux out of it’s way spreading questionable reports about patent violations, security etc etc

4 -> Have you ever tried to run a windows server for, let’s say, a year to see if it’s possible? I cannot say it isn’t but i failed to keep a Windows server running more than 4 months without restarting. Linux on the other hand… well… i had a server managing a glass manufacturing firm. Imagina a P2 running flat 16 months without shutdown/restarting of any kind. And when it had shut down, it was because of a power failure that lasted too long and depleted te power reserves.

5 -> I didn’t agree with Tux500, either, but it was an atempt to make Linux popular. Doesn’t Windows spend billions on marketing?

6 -> How can you even compare Linux with Windows and even Apple in driver creation process? I mean, many of the Linux programmers that do drivers are working in their spare time, FREE! They come from their dayjob, sit in front of the computer, and try to give something of value to the community. While Microsoft spends billions on such things. Yes, drivers are really scarce on Linux, BUT some of them are created through reverse engineering and others created from scratch because firms would not release the source code to the Linux community nor try to create a driver.

    Now some extras…

1 -> Windows is monolithic, Linux is modular, thus harder to be attacked by viruses, although possible

2 -> Did you try to work with Liunx distros? And if you tried, did you pay anything to download them or to get support from the communities? Don’t think so…

3 -> Are you a programmer? Or do you even bother to read Windows software EULAs? I don’t think you really read them. So why pick on Linux? Even more, many licenses are used on Windows ports, so i donnot see the relevance of your so-called problem. Please explain.

4 -> What i said about uptimes (and actually about everything i wrote) is from my own experience. Do you also talk from experience?

5 -> The fact that the car crushed has nothing to do with the Tux stick. Etherway, Linux got some publicity, which is a good thing.

6 -> Have you ever tried to program a driver, something? And then release it so that anyone would benefit from it and learn? On the other hand, do you know that for the hardware Linux has drivers for, many distros offer an out-of-the-box experience that Windows NEVER could offer? And do you know that, at least on large distros, after you set up the repositories, you just need to enter a command or to click with you mouse twice ot install the needed drivers? Or that in case of wireless devices you can directly load the windows drivers through a program? These are only examples…

I use Windows about 80% of the time, for various external reasons that impose this use. And in many ways Windows IS better than Linux, i admit! But i prefer Linux to Windows anytime

This comments were intended as a balance to the attack you launched on Linux. And some of the comments don’t even apply to Linux itself, nor are 100% related.

This is just another Linux-hater, a guy that knows that Linux is the future. I dont know why you have to make a blog posting bashing something that is only positive. Linux is only trying to free people from the clutches of proprietary software, giving them a system that is fast, malware free, and just works. 18. Jay Says:

I found this thing funny to some degree. But every joke has a dose of truth in it.
So here is my couple of things I don’t ever want to hear from Linux fanboiz (not: I said fanboiz, not all users because I will always read tech tips from good sources)

    1. Don’t tell me that is “just works” when it really does not. It was funny to see when v 7.04 (of you know which distribution) was released, there was a boat load of “reviews” talking about Windows migration assistant. Only a selected few actually tested the feature and reported that IT DOES NOT WORK. It kind of blows out the whole credibility of the thing, because how the hell I am suppose to trust that other features work.

    2. Don’t tell me why should pick this distro over windows. Tell me why should I pick THIS distro over other 300+ distros. Continuing on the whole “Windows replacement” subject, many Linux distributions cannot even handle the most simple task: Internet browsing. And I am not talking about network card setup or IE specific sites. I am talking about actual content handling. I found a number of sites that work just fine in Firefox/Windows but do not in Firefox/Linux. Sometimes the browser would crash, sometimes the page is not rendered properly or a plug-in would not play the media (even the plug-in is installed). I found sites where a web page would not be rendered properly in Firefox, but works just fine in Konqueror (or vise versa) on the same site :)

    3. Don’t tell me that having access to source code is better for me. Don’t tell me that I can fix a bug or modify the program to fit my needs. First of all, after thousands of talented developers looked at the code there should not be any bugs in a stable final distribution. Secondly, a PC is just another home device/tool for me (and many others). When I flip a channel on my TV I expect the freaking channel to switch, not a hello message from Gnome Bug Buddy. BTW, why they call him a “buddy”, it is the one thing I do not want to see ever.

    4. Stop telling me that I can customize Linux desktop in gazillion ways that Windows cannot touch. After all, when I click on “File Save” button, I do not care what font/color the button is, all I care about that it saves my file.

    5. I promise it is the last one. Enough with Microsoft hating already. Just because Suse made a pact with the “devil” it did not make it a bad OS. BTW: so far, openSuse is the only one that installed properly on all 5 of my home PCs (I played more than a dozen of others and they could not claim that). If anything, successful collaboration between Linux and Windows (at home and in business environments) will only open up another path for new Linux migrants.

    Great article.

I love Linux, but too many Linux users just take themselves too seriously. Linus himself doesn’t see this as a religion. He just wanted to make a better OS than DOS and he did that.

To some Linux users, ANY criticism of Linux is sacreligious. That’s just silly.

  24. Gangsta^S Says:

Oh so now, the linux community as a whole can’t put preasure on hardware manufactures about their drivers? That’s just absurd. What you’re suggesting, is that we should not use our freedom of speech for our political benefit. If a company refuses to support Linux, than we as a community have a right to protest that, and boycott their other products, just like other communities have rights to vote with their dollars.

  25. Phil Says:

    :!: :!: :!:

What’s even funnier than the actual article, which was amusing, is the number of posts that take it out of context into some type of a techno battle over the “evil empire” yet again. Every OS has it’s place and it’s use. Neither Microsoft or Linux is going to fully lose control over the marketplace.

If you like something and enjoy it, why do you have cram techno facts down everyone else’s throat. Enjoy it because you like it. If you want to wear penguin t-shirts, by all means you have that freedom.

This isn’t a civil rights debate, so why do you even care if someone else’s facts may or may not be on target with yours. It’s an expression of opinion without the need for debate. Clearly stated in the text, self-humor and a Linux user. Why does it have to go past that?? I can’t figure that out for the life of me.

You want to get involved in a battle over something, strap on a uniform and join me in Iraq, then you’ll have something worth fighting for.

Uptime is an remendously serious reason to use Linux!

  34. Ron Wilson Says:

“and can secure it to the teeth”

Id like to see an article about securing linux to the teeth. Because there are probably windows users out there like me that didnt even know that my pc had teeth! Like, where are they - behind the dvd drive casing? How often should i clean them? Does my health insurance cover any damage to them? Can they chew through cabling? Will they chatter if my pc gets cold?

  35. Haos Says:

I second to that… just compare this thread`s comments to the following ones - about win and mac users… i doubt there will be anything more than quite a few laughs…

  36. Haos Says:

This is what i`ve been talking about… So i do have to use Linux to have brains?

Listen, chum… i suggest you to speak with Alex Ionescu.
This guy`s 21, has more brains than all people who commented here, and recently replaced Mark Russinovich on David Solomon’s NT Internals seminars…

He may show you things that NT can do, of which you`d never ever dream to be possible.

Having both of your opinion, i`ll rather follow him…

  37. Haos Says:

My Win2003 server box i currently use as desktop has now 68 days of uptime. I can easily run it for more than 3 months and longer, with only need of reboot by Windows Updates, or at least those i find necessary.
I use it to browse, irc, code, compile, several VMs, even gaming…
    Tell me more about stability…?

  38. Haos Says:

Both Windows and Linux have their good and bad sides (possibly Mac too, but as i dont use it, i cant tell).

The wrong thing is to force anyone to use one particular set, llike closed source os and closed source apps (as Ms wants us) or open source OS and open source apps(as Linux/FSF fanboys wants us) ONLY!!

I find both of those sets limiting… and if the latter group thries to convince me that this is for my freedom, i find it a bloody hypocrisy!

  41. world Says:

Maybe if there was a single joke in your post, people might have considered it to be humor. The only thing I see are logical fallacies and amazingly bad analogies.

You accuse us of lack of self-humor? Oh yeah, let’s see just how hilarious your post is.

    1. You said there aren’t Linux games, which is patently false. You compared breaking into an unlocked, unsecured porta-john with no valubles inside to breaking into a bank; that’s a total logical disconnect if I’ve ever seen one.

    2. You mock the community for having _two_ phrases that describe the different freedoms of software distribution, I don’t know where you got the liberty thing from, I think you just made that up.

    3. When was the last time anyone discussed the ‘freeness’ of a license? Licenses work differently for different things. I find your disrespect for licenses very disturbing in the way you advocate just ignoring the rights of the creators of software.

    4. Competing on uptime is soooo last millennium.

    5. The Linux sponsorship of the car race has been mocked by the entire world to the point of disgust. It’s ugly to see how quick the community was to turn inwards and attack their own with the same fervor they attack SCO’s shady business deals. With the disrespectful way this was handled, you’d think the car was running Windows software or something. But thanks for adding more fuel to that fire.

    6. Microsoft is hardly having problems with drivers. In fact, they’re the ones responsible for making sure that they don’t work with other OSs if they can get away with it (see: Vista driver signatures and no more unified driver architecture allowed). Linux has more drivers and runs on more hardware than any other OS. It’s the silent majority that works, but the problem is that the few, big companies like graphics card manufacturers are still insisting there are trade secrets in their drivers.

So all in all, yeah, you’re right, how could anyone possibly think that all this was NOT just a friendly nudge to the Linux community?
I mean, you mocked them in the most condescending way you could, how could that not be interpreted by everyone as pure adoration?

  42. vi Says:

Fantastic! Judging by the content and number of comments, you hit the bulls eye.I always had a suspicion that some Linux users are aliens. Now I am horrified when realize how many of them actually are aliens.
Linux needs more tough love. The keyword here is “tough”. I don’t want a smarty-pants - sissy-boy operating system. May be in two years or so it will be ready for the desktop to be used by normal human users.

  43. Things We're Tired of Hearing from Windows Users Says:

  45. Haos Says:

Yes… everyone hates you. You get mocked every place you turn up…

So this blog entry contained stereotypes? How rude….

  46. Haos Says:

Just a small example: Windows is stable nowadays. If right drivers used, i`d even call it ROCK solid. It`s not what it used to be…Yet loads of penguinistas keep saying something quite opposite. If i`d want to correct only this stereotype approach everywhere it gets public, i woudn`t have a life. No matter how many people correct it, no matter how many proves we present, you guys wont accept it.

You try to fight stereotypes? It`s your call. Just mind that the more you fight them, like here, the more stereotypical you are perceived, Its your call…

  47. Ron Wilson Says:

“..I mean, you mocked them in the most condescending way you could”

If you want condescending, these might be better:

*Linux Users Unify for Fight Against Other Distros.
*New Distro Alert - “Red Whine” connects to the whine network and whines constantly on your behalf.
*Linux Catches Virus - network distributable bug infects all linux users and forces them to treat new linux users with the same respect Microsoft treats competitors with.
*Linux box up for 6000 hours! - giving owner oppertunity to write own drivers and applications and wonder why his USB devices wont work.
*Linux Users confirmed as More Precious than diamonds.

Yep. I think these are more condescending.

  55. Jay Says:

“If you are so serious not to laugh of yourself, you really need to turn of the bloody computer and go out with friends, have some beer!”

In order to be able to do that one needs real (not imaginary) friends.
It is difficult to start a new friendship if you live your life by the book “Insulting Windows users for Dummies”. I cannot imagine a server closet queen getting new friends if the first question of the dialog is “What’s your name?” and the 2nd question is “Are you a Windows user?”. Mean joke, I know :)

The comment that I made about people staying with microsoft because they do not have the brains to do any better ,was in response to a comment made from another(Linux is for geeks with small penises),I truly did not intend too offend any one ,I simply replied to what I thought was an unfair comment ! I think there is a little flaming going on both sides here.
In the future I will try to choose my word more carefully ! Just for the record I have 3 girls and 1 son all of them prefer my linux boxes over my wifes Vista ,to say that a person has to be a geek with a small penis to use linux is not really a nice thing to say is it?

  58. pugfantus Says:

Yeah… You’ve fallen into the age old StarWars Parsec Trap… Parsec is a unit of Distance, not Time… If you were a GNU/Linux User, you’d know that…

  59. danny ritchie Says:

Again ,my comments were in response to a comment made that it takes a geek with a small penis to operate linux.
It was not intended to offend you ! My kids like linux for the games,my wife was unhappy with Vista so she trashed it! She installed SuSe10.2 and she likes it!

  60. danny ritchie Says:

Thats a good one , I will keep that in mind!

  61. Jay Says:

I was not offended at all. :)
It is difficult to post here without some sense of humor.

BTW: Suse 10.2 is also my distro of choice. But I don’t think it makes me any smarter :)

  62. Comrade Smack Says:

Wow. That was as harsh as it was idiotic.

First of all, I never said Linux inherently costs money, I was referring to Stallman’s take on the whole deal. He did start the “free as in freedom” statement.

Secure? I didn’t say that Linux was insecure, either. I stated that it wasn’t out-of-the-box secure. My point is still very valid that Linux is secureable, whereas Windows is not.

  63. danny ritchie Says:

I agree with both points ! I also think it is fair to say that a lot of us linux users take things a little too serious!(I’ll have a beer now)
I have had a lot of sleepless nights lately, been working on mastering the bash shell and the C programming language ,which I think is pretty tough for a high school dropout!
If I seem a little hostile towards microsoft ,it’s because I grew up in a family that couldn’t afford a computer,It just seems to me that microsoft is only out for the big bucks, and what they have to offer is not really any better!
    thanks for the fun!

  64. danny ritchie Says:

Yes,You’re right and I apologize ! I let one comment get under my skin and that was the comment about geeks with a small penis.
It upset me because a lot of people actually do believe that it takes a geek to use linux(MY KIDS USE IT JUST FINE).
I am always hearing from family, friends and sometimes even co-workers
(all windows users) about how their computer has so many problems .
usually I wind up fixing it for them, but as a rule they are still not happy ,they want something better !
When I talk to the people about linux ,the first words out of their mouth is ,thats too hard or that is for geeks !
    where does this come from?

  65. TEST Says:

Linux is difficult as far as Operating Systems are concerned. If you’re going to solve a small issue like a VPN, it’s considerably more difficult than in the Windows Environment.

This is becoming less and less true as the years go forward, but Linux operates much differently than both Mac and Windows.

Linux is designed at the command line, if you want to do anything you go there. If there are little things you want to do, sometimes it’s just easier to bust out the GUI (for example, text editing. vi makes men cry.)

Windows is designed at the GUI If you want to do anything you must do it with with pictures and icons and, GASP, a mouse! If there are little things you want to do, bust out the command line (for example, directory browsing, file deletion..)

The small penis comment was in regards to Uptime. It’s mildly important but not to the extent that quite a few “geeks with small penises” make it out to be.

  66. danny ritchie Says:

I have to agree that windows is easier to use because of the fact that you hardly ever have to use the command line,I ‘m not sure that it is as efficient though!
yes,the vi editor can be tough if you’re not used to it(no pictures,no icons),but I think it is worth the effort to learn.
I don’t have much to say about the uptime issue because it is not really important unless you are running a server that cannot be down at all!

  67. Haos Says:

This comment shows you have never seen what can you do with DOS….

  68. Haos Says:

    Why not?

  69. Haos Says:

Vista requires quite a heavy hardware to show its capabilities. There is still SP1 to be issued. If Vista doesn`t please you, you can easily use XP prof or 2003, with even better effect.

Vista isn`t perfect and still has years to mature, but ffs, most of whines against it are caused by using it on too weak equipment.

  70. danny ritchie Says:

I,ve seen it ,but it can be done with linux too!

  71. Mimmus Says:

Do you use WIn2003 as a personal desktop??? I’m speaking about enterprise servers, not PCs.
My DB server with 20-25 Oracle instances, used by more than 200 users, is up since 250 days, when I had to shut it for maintenance of electrical equipment (not for problem to the server).

  72. danny ritchie Says:

We are the collective, resistance is futile ,you will be assimilated!

  73. danny ritchie Says:

It’s your choice, but why would you use windows if you are good with linux/unix?

  74. danny ritchie Says:

Linux has more drivers than windows, we didn’t like vista so we tried to install XP
on my wife’s computer ,guess what ,no compatible drivers!
We installed SuSe 10.2 and Simply Mepis ,now we are just fine!

  75. danny ritchie Says:

I respect your beliefs but I’d rather be able to make copies of my O.S ,and distribute it ,than to be forced against my will to pay for a license to use a product that I already paid for!
All jokes aside ,if I pay $400 or $600 for something ,shouldn’t I be able to call it mine ?
Uncle Bill has a great product ,just a screwed up way of way of selling it ,I guess the Russians were right when they said that communism would take the United States without firing a shot. I thought we ran away from England so we could be free!
It is you’re choice free or not free!

  76. danny ritchie Says:

I guess the average citizen is left out then ,not all of us have the money to pay the heavy price (thanks to the gun slinging President) for a system large enough to run Vista!

  77. danny ritchie Says:

Since when do you own a blog ? This is America you Know, even though we have lost all most all of are rights(oops I better not say that , Bush’s goons will get me )we still have the right to speak out!
does anybody in Russia have an extra room?

  82. Alan the Great Says:

You are an asshat. I use linux, and if there isn’t a driver for something I deal with it. It’s not the companie’s responsibility to provide free drivers for you. This is why people hate linux users.

  83. ejes Says:

    here we go.
I have been a long time advocate for linux - and i really really really am disgusted by your entire rant.

all of those are VALID, even if you don’t feel it’s so. how about you get your facts straight before you say anything?

There are viruses/malware that target linuxes.. however it’s VERY difficult for any kind of attack to be successful. you comparing linux to a port-o-john is quite wrong. many MANY companies use linux as their primary web server due to the fact that it is very secure. I work for a bank, and yes, that’s what they use - so to use your line… yes, people are trying to break into this port-o-john, unsuccesfully, but your bank is empty.

Linux is free - as in ALL of those things. it’s free in all ways that software can be free. the sourcecode is free (to modify and contribute as you see fit), it’s free to call what you want (linux, redhat, gentoo whatever) as in speech, it’s free to run, it’s free as in liberty, beer, speech, freedom, butterflys and free as in your pirated software. the difference between you going to pirate bay and downloading photochop, is that i’m allowed to own linux… you, on the other hand, are not allowed to own photoshop.

yes, system uptime is a great way to measure how reliable a computer is… yes i know you’re too busy rebooting your computer to care how many milliseconds it’s been up… whatever, don’t get uptime envy - just get linux.

linux users can be pesky, it’s true, but with reason. linux users are passionate about their system. and why not? and i really don’t see why you’d equate the drivers of the cars folly to the linux os, or those who use it? that’s like saying “you run windows - you must be a better driver than those linux users” use your head if you’re going to make a simile.

i agree, linux should pressure companies to develop drivers for their operating system, just like microsoft pressures companies, just like mac, just like you… that’s called business… sorry to burst your bubble.

learn a little; think for yourself; and don’t talk shit about shit you don’t know.

  84. Alan the Great Says:

    If I may chime in….

The thing about linux is, you can do what you want. Many things you said I agree with, but I can see Rea’s point too.

@Linux users should pressure companies for drivers:
No, we shouldn’t. They are successful companies because they make money. Linux offers no money to them, so they direct their resources to other things.

Many companies do, in fact, provide drivers for linux, for example ATi. This is because they see linux as a great system, and they can devote the resources to create drivers, at their expense.

Also, if the hardware itself is any good, chances are someone’s already made a driver for it.

In conclusion, the whole point of GNU/Linux is that it is an alternative to the 3 or 4 expensive systems. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to use it. If you like it, go ahead. Nobody asks anything in return.

  85. ejes Says:

linux pressuring companies for drivers is not quite accurate, they pressure companies to release their api so that the community itself can write drivers, companies who refuse to give standards should give alternatives.
linux is an emerging market, and a company who doesn’t produce linux drivers, nor releases api information will loose the linux market.
producing drivers for windows systems does not in fact make them money, people using their product regardless of operating system are what make them money. development of drivers, is merely a courtesy that linux users should also be able to enjoy.

yes ati does produce drivers for linux, so do many companies… and they do so BECAUSE linux community pressured them to do so - without a voice, nobody would be heard.

  86. Alan the Great Says:

“producing drivers for windows systems does not in fact make them money, people using their product regardless of operating system are what make them money.”

Right. And we all know how well hardware works without drivers. Windows being the most popular operating system, there is the most potential income in appealing to the Windows market.

“and they do so BECAUSE linux community pressured them to do so - without a voice, nobody would be heard.”

This I don’t agree with. Partly because of the ‘Linux community’ part, when ‘A linux community’ would be more accurate. The number of operating systems that use the Linux kernel is many, and there is no single community that I am aware of.

Mostly, though, what I meant was that some companies either see Linux as a popular enough OS that it could provide a potential source of $$$, or because they think that Linux users shouldn’t be left to make their own drivers. Either way, these companies are great and there should be more of them. And any company that won’t release their api doesn’t need my business anyways.

Basically my little rant was based on the fact that writing a Linux driver is not the responsibility of anyone who doesn’t want to. It would be like boycotting a fancy restaurant for not providing ketchup– some people like it, but mostly it wouldn’t even be used.

  87. A dude Says:

Heh, I’ve been guilty of many of these things :)

  88. jj Says:

Damn good analysis and right on. I use Linux and have been for 13 years. But I also still use other OS’s on old but still usefull hardware; such as DOS, Windows (all), BSD, etc… The good thing about a PC, it will always do what it did when you bought/built it, as long as you don’t get caught up in the bigger/better/smaller/upgrade traps. And yes, all my systems are secure enough for what I do with them.
    Here’s a late thank-you for a fun read.
